- Jason,
-
- I think both you and Michael have some valid points here. It show that you can make
- money off the OS, but not by virtue of the OS alone. The apps are what sells the OS. Yes, I know
- people routinely ask "Does it run Windows?" when they buy a computer. But this is because they
- want to be able to run all the standard applications that a Windows capable computer can run.
-
- In essence it's a circular corrundrum. And, because people cannot solve it, or take a
- stand, and maybe make a bit of a sacrifice - Microsoft wins.
-
- However - in recent news - and this might be AR worthy: The European Computer
- Manufacturers Association recently gave their blessing to the APIW standard developed by Willows
- Software. Microsoft is very upset about this, and you I am sure are curious why...
-
- The APIW standard is one which makes other machines capable of running Windows
- Binaries on a non Intel/Windows equipped setup. Their original goal was to produce a system with
- which one could develop Windows apps on a system other than Windows. Additionally, the code
- could be reused to run on Mac, Unix, etc. However, they had to come up with a way to test the
- software without actually loading it onto the Windows equipped machine. Hence - this thing is
- capable of running Windows software w/o Windows!
-
- Although this is not so impressive - here's the kicker. It's free for personal/noncomercial
- use! And - you can get source for free too! They have written it to compile on a variety of platforms
- from Mac System, to NetWare, to OS/2, and many flavors of Unix... Someone could concievably
- put in the appropriate #IFDEF statements to make it compile on the Amiga...
-
- Check out http://www.willows.com/ for details! Get your copy before MS lawyers get to
- them first!
- - Porter
-
- PS: I guess that would kill OS sales, wouldn't it? ;-)
